Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep score in tennis?

Points win games, games win sets, sets win matches.

To win a game, you need 4 points and to win by 2. Your first point is 15-love, second point is 30-love, and third point is 40-love. If the game is tied at 40-love, that’s called a “deuce”. To win a game when it reaches deuce, you need to first gain the “advantage” then win the next point.

To win a set, you need 6 games and to win by 2. If a set is tied at 6 games each, then you play a “tiebreak”. The tiebreak is an extended game where you typically play to 7 points and you need to win by 2.

What do I need to play tennis?

You need a tennis racquet, tennis balls, and a court! The tennis racquet is made up of the racquet frame, strings, and a grip. Many racquets will come with a grip and strings pre-attached, but you should periodically re-string, and frequently re-grip, your racquet.
